HOW TO MANAGE YOUR DATA SUBSCRIPTION EFFICIENTLY

Data is arguably the most precious thing to every Nigerian that uses a smartphone but unfortunately, it always seems to be expensive. We all love to surf the internet at our free time (or we make the time for it 😊).

We buy data mainly to update ourselves on what's going on around us and the world at large. The downside to data we buy is that we always exhaust it before the end of our subscription. So this makes us wonder if what we buy is truly what we get.

While this might be true, we should also consider the fact that we may be overusing our data thinking that we have enough.

Here are some tips that will assist you to use your data more efficiently;

1. Know what app consumes your data the most:
To find a solution to any problem, you must understand the problem first. Find out which app consumes most of your data. On your phone go to Settings->Network & Internet->data usage->app data usage. That will give you an insight on which of the apps on your phone you use most of the data on.

2. How do you use the app that consumes the data:

Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube and their likes consume high data. This is because of the contents downloaded from the app (images and videos). There are some tweaks we can do to minimize the data consumption.
-Use the lite version of the apps; Facebook lite, Instagram lite, YouTube Go etc. These versions display the minimum graphics needed.
-Video and audio streaming should not be on auto play. So you decide which videos/audio you'd like to play.
-you can also disable images such that it's only when you click on the image you wish to view that it will be displayed.

3. Your Browser also consumes data, but that depends on the websites you frequently visit. Those pop up adverts (below the screen on in-between the texts) also use your data to display. Because some websites rely on those ads to generate revenue, you may not be able block the ads from displaying. At least you can minimize them. On your browser you can check to see which website consumes most of the data. Go to browser menu->settings->lite mode.

- Enable the lite mode and check to see which website consumes the most data.

- Under settings menu, go to  ->site settings, this is where you do most of the tweaks. Make sure you block ads, block pop-ups, block media auto-play, block automatic downloads and Allow cookies.

4. Buy premium version of the free apps you use: All free apps enable pop-up ads by default. Like we mentioned before, the ads are to generate revenue. Some apps have a premium version. Once you buy, the ads disappear but some don not have a premium version. If premium is not available, all you need to do is disable background data from the app so that all activities of the app is stopped while not in use. This can be done to all apps on your phone. By saving data you are also saving battery.

-Go to settings->app& notification-> choose your app of choice ->data usage-> disable background data.

-You can also minimize the usage of free apps like games, entertainment news apps etc.

5. Video streaming: instead of streaming a video directly from a website, download the video and view it offline. By downloading;
-It will save you from the issues of buffering and/or refreshing so you don't need extra data.
-You also will not have to worry about those annoying ads that pops between streaming.
-You can watch the videos as many times as you wish to.

There you have it. These are the tricks and tweaks I use to manage my data. You will not believe the amount of data you'll save by employing these tips. Try them out and you'll discover that you can do more with less.
